The simplest way to comprehend the liver is to imagine a filter. Much of what we put into our bodies is filtered and cleansed by the liver. If the liver does not manage toxins that we ingest, they will be kept in the fat tissues and cell membranes and will be discharged during workouts and stress, creating adverse effects like queasiness and stomach aches. As well, matter that is not cleansed by the liver can build up in the blood, burdening the immune system with a greater amount of work.
There are two distinct parts in the process of detoxification. The common reason of the entire cleansing action is to transform fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble matter that can be rid of by the body. During the first phase of this process, the liver transforms toxic chemicals into different chemicals that are less adverse through a complex set of chemical reactions. The free radicals which result from this action can, if too many are created, damage the liver cells. Some of this damage can be lessened by antioxidants. The second phase of detoxification involves the conversion of the preceding phase’s chemical byproducts into water-soluble substances which are then excreted by the body. For this to occur, amino acids like taurine and cysteine (both of which possess sulfur) are necessary, in addition to substances such as glutamine and glycine.
While detoxification is one of its major purposes, the liver is accountable for various other jobs as well. Other imperative responsibilities of the liver are making bile, which is needed in the breakdown or fats; aiding digestion by processing nutrients absorbed by the intestine; synthesizing cholesterol to help sustain cell membranes; ridding of bacteria from the blood. It also produces proteins for the body to use in immune function; metabolizing alcohol; keeping fat soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K, various minerals, and sugars; managing blood clotting; managing hormone balance; keeping extra blood; and filter the blood by ridding of toxic matter.
Diet for a Healthy Liver
Evidently, the liver is too significant an organ to put in danger. In this area, we have to take on actions that help maintain and make the liver stronger. What you eat can play an important role in this area. A whole-foods diet that contains many fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean sources of protein, and good fats lessens wear and tear on the liver. As well, drinking a lot of water is essential to cleanse. Here are a few more detailed nutrition guidelines:
Meal Size
Eat adequate sized meals and do not over eat. Eating causes some strain on the liver. As a component of the digestive system, the liver needs to process all nutrients, and non-nutrients that come from food. Eating too much can put unwanted strain on the liver by making it work overtime to get the job done. Daily meals should not make you feel as though you have just consumed a Thanksgiving dinner.
Try eating your biggest meal at lunchtime and lighter meal for dinner. This will lessen the amount of work the liver must do while you slumber. The time you slumber is when the body can focus on healing. During these “healing hours”, the less work your body will need to do, and the better it can recuperate from its daily stress.
Fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables have many different nutrients, as well as antioxidants, phytochemicals, and crotennoids that can be helpful to both common health, and liver health. The larger amount of different fruits and vegetables you eat, the more disease ridding nutrients you will absorb. Some particular fruits and vegetables can help in both Phase 1 and 2 detoxification processes. Spinach, tomatoes, and beets have antioxidants, B vitamins, and carotenoids that set off the efficiency of Phase one detoxification. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower have natural sulfur compounds that help in the efficiency of Phase 2 detoxification. Green beans assist in keeping cell membranes as well as liver cells healthy. Shiitake mushrooms have antiviral ingredients and protect the liver. All mushrooms have powerful immune-boosting effects and are extremely good for fighting HCV. Carrots, in regards to their antioxidant and enzymatic properties, offer protection to the liver as well. Try putting artichokes in your salad to gain their liver-protecting ability.
Fats
Even though fats are a great energy source, they are not easy for the liver to process, and the total amount of fat in your diet should be reasonable. Keep away from fried foods and any foods that are enriched with fat. A Big Mac and large order of fries would certainly fall into the category of foods to keep away from. Focus instead on consuming the “good” types of fat found in coldwater fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, flounder, trout, and mackerel. Avocados and some types of nuts and seeds like sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, or oil, pumpkin seeds, and legumes such as beans, peas, and lentils contain good fats as well, which are advantageous to liver regeneration.
It is always ideal to grill, broil, or bake your foods. Certain oils are better than others are for cooking. The two ideal oils are canola, which has omega-3 fats, and olive oil, which has monounsaturated fats. When available, use cold-pressed oils. They are oils that are processed at cooler temperatures. Heat processing creates trans fats, which are damaging to your liver and to your cardiovascular system as well. Cold-pressed oils might be difficult to find, and scarce, and are mostly more expensive. Whatever oil you cook with, cold-pressed or not, use very little of it. As well, when considering topping that whole-grain toast in the morning, try using hummus or olive oil for a spread in substitution of margarine or butter.
Refined sugars
It is good to stay away from refined, processed foods such as cakes, cookies, white bread, and pasta, which can lower enzyme activity and add strain to the liver. These types of foods are transformed into sugar very simply and have trans fats that keep important prostaglandins that guard the liver by lessening swelling. Alternatively, combine whole grains into your diet by eating brown rice, millet, amaranth, quinoa, and whole-grain breads and cereals. These less refined foods lessen stress on the liver.
Protein
Eat lean sources of protein such as beans, nuts and seeds, fish, and white-meat chicken and turkey. Stay away from fatty meats like sausage, salami, pepperoni, bacon, and hot dogs. Eggs as well are a great source of protein. They contain B vitamins and sulfur-containing compounds that help in both Phase 1, and Phase 2 detoxification.
Other foods
To aid in sustaining liver health, try putting garlic in your food. Garlic contains methionine, which is essential for cleansing, and contains selenium as well, which is an antioxidant that is key in Phase 1 detoxification. Additionally, garlic is helpful because it has allycin and is very good for the liver that has been abused by HCV. Try not to get too close to anybody after they have eaten garlic! Wheat germ also aids in detoxification because of its vitamin E and selenium attributes. Bitter foods can help the liver. Endive, lemons, dandelion green, romaine lettuce, and quinoa are all bitter foods that can aid in ridding toxins from the liver. Barley leaf and its grass have chlorophyll, which can e used as a liver cleanser. Having hot water and lemon to drink in the morning can aid in stimulating digestion. For a drink that will help in liver cleansing, blend a whole lemon with the pits, and rind included, with eight ounces of water, or citrus juice and one tablespoon of olive oil. You will need to strain the solution before drinking it. Remember to slice the lemon into chunks before putting it in the mixer.

Also another good thing is to go on a juice fast. when I have a cold and have cloughed for weeks as I have great difficulty shaking them (didn’t try the things I mentioned as didn’t know then), I go on a juice fast and within a couple days I am well. I did take drops of certain essential oils with them..I think I took them from Linda lung cleanse suggestions. Use just real juiced produce, herb and green teas and potassium broth (recipe here)..make sure your bowels are working well by maybe taking intestinal cleanse one and two with the fast (herbdoc.com)
i’ve heard about the master cleanse and what it does.. but i haven’t found anything about it that could help my problem..
my intentions are not for losing weight. i read about one person who did the cleanse to help her kidney disease..
what i was wondering was, would it be a good idea if i did to cleanse to help my gastric problem. my stomach doesnt seem to digest my food and it just gets stuck there.. will the cleanse help it?
I have done the cleanse 3 times thus far and the first time was prompted by some GI issues that I had discovered I had. Actually quite a few GI issues…stress, college, work lol – life happens. To be honest though, my GI issues seemed to clear up, but I guess that could be my age too. I had great energy…clarity and no more crippling stomach issues. Since my last panendoscopy my GI doctor said I pretty much cleared everything up! Whether it was the MC or not, I have no clue, but it made me feel better regardless. This is an explanation of the detoxification stages that helped me to understand what was going on when I was on it.
Detoxification Stages
Here is an overview of the detoxification stages during a juice fast. The time periods are a general estimation.
Stage 1 (Day 1 To Day 2)
On the first day of fasting, the blood sugar level drops below 70 mg/dl. To restore the blood to the normal glucose level, liver glycogen is converted to glucose and released into the blood. This reserve is enough for half a day. The body then reduces the basal metabolic rate (BMR). The rate of internal chemical activity in resting tissue is lowered to conserve energy. The heart slows and blood pressure is reduced. Glycogen is pulled from the muscle causing some weakness. The first wave of cleansing is usually the worst.
Headaches, dizziness, nausea, bad breath, glazed eyes and a heavily coated tongue are signs of the first stage of cleansing. Hunger can be the most intense in this period unless the enema is used which quickly assists the body into the fasting state by ending digestion in the colon.
Stage 2 (Day 3 To Day 7)
Fats, composed of transformed fatty acids, are broken down to release glycerol from the gliceride molecules and are converted to glucose. The skin may become oily as rancid oils are purged from the body. People with problem-free skin may have a few days of pimples or even a boil. A pallid complexion is also a sign of waste in the blood. Ketones are formed by the incomplete oxidation of fats. It is suspected that the ketones in the blood suppress the appetite by affecting the food-satiety center in the hypothalamus. You may feel hungry for the first few days of the fast. This effect is temporary. The desire to eat will disappear. Lack of hunger may last 40 to 60 days, depending on whether you are on water or juice.
The body embraces the fast and the digestive system is able to take a much-needed rest, focusing all of its energies on cleansing and healing. White blood cell and immune system activity increases. You may feel pain in your lungs. The cleansing organs and the lungs are in the process of being repaired. Periodically, the lymphatic system expels mucoid matter through the nose or throat. The volume excreted of this yellow-colored mucus can be shocking. The sinuses go through periods of being clogged, then will totally clear. The breath is still foul and the tongue coated. Within the intestine, the colon is being repaired and impacted feces on the intestinal wall start to loosen.
Stage 3 (Day 8 to Day 15)
On the latter part of an extended fast, you can experience enhanced energy, clear-mindedness and feel better than you have felt since childhood. On the downside, old injuries may become irritated and painful. This is a result of the body’s increased ability to heal during fasting. If you had broken your arm 10 years before, there is scar tissue around the break. At the time of the break, the body’s ability to heal was directly related to lifestyle. If you lived on a junk-food diet, the body’s natural healing ability was compromised.
During fasting, the body’s healing process is at optimum efficiency. As the body scours for dead or damaged tissue, the lymphocytes enter the older, damaged tissue secreting substances to dissolve the damaged cells. These substances irritate the nerves in the surrounding region and cause a reoccurrence of aches from previously injured areas that may have disappeared years earlier. The pain is good as the body is completing the healing process. The muscles may become tight and sore due to toxin irritation. The legs can be the worst affected, as toxins accumulate in the legs. Cankers are common in this stage due to the excessive bacteria in the mouth. Daily gargling with salt and water will prevent or heal cankers.
Stage 4 (Day 16 to Day 30)
The body is completely adapted to the fasting process. There is more energy and clarity of mind. Cleansing periods can be short with many days of feeling good in between. There are days when the tongue is pink and the breath is fresh. The healing work of the organs is being completed. After the detoxification mechanisms have removed the causative agent or render it harmless, the body works at maximum capacity in tissue proliferation to replace damaged tissue. While a short fast will reduce the symptoms, a longer fast can completely heal. Homeostatic balance is at optimum levels. The lymphatic system is clean except for a rare discharge of mucus through the nose or throat. After day 20, the mind is affected. Heightened clarity and emotional balance are felt at this time. Memory and concentration improve.
Stage 5 (Breaking the Fast)
The sticky, toxic, mucoid coating on the intestinal wall is loose, and the first meal frees it from the intestinal wall. Toxins enter the blood through the colon. The gallbladder dumps its waste in a heavy discharge of bile. This can cause an instant bowel movement upon eating followed by intense diarrhea. If the symptoms are too uncomfortable, an enema will help.
Autolysis
After fasting for several days, the body goes into a condition known as "autolysis". This is when the body starts to feed on itself because you are giving it no solid food to feed off of. Fortunately, the body in it’s brilliant design feeds on only the weak, diseased, dying, or dead cells. All of the vital organs, the heart, liver, kidneys, and the brain are spared and because of the absence of all of the sickly cells in your body, your vitals are actually rejuvinated and made healthier because of the clean bloodstream and unadulterated oxygen now circulating throughout your body.

I need a good liver flush. I just started taking Milk Thistle and would like to keep taking it as a protector, but I want to find a detoxification product that I can take for a few days that will really flush out the system.
There are some good herbal combos that work for that. I have one that has dandelion and milk thistle both in it. And it works for me well.
Go to your local health food store and examine the herbs section. There are regualr brands of herbs which make many combos of formulas for specific needs. Just look for one that says liver cleanse, and examine ingredients. You then have to learn to dose yourself. There is a suggested dosage, but sometimes, you have to adapt to take less or more as is needed.
When I first started taking the Liver cleanse herbs, I would feel really miserable. Just an incredibly terrible feeling. It actually took me a few times before I realized I was feeling terrible when I took the liver cleanse, beacause it was working!! then after few years of occasional use, I actually could feel great when taking it. Unfortunately, I’m back to feeling terrible when taking it.
But expect some physical response while taking it. Try to take it when you’re not going to be doing lots emotionally or physically. I also try to cut back on eating lots, just gentle foods, so you don’t stress out the body. After all, the liver is what helps keep the body cleaned, so you’re cleaning the cleaner. You don’t want to freak out the body too much.
I don’t do it for long time. I might take couple pills in morning, maybe at night but usually not for more than a day’s effort. it’s not like it’s a colon cleanse where you’ve got several yards of cleansing to do.
Try it every couple weeks if you feel you’re in need of good liver cleansing. But I wouldn’t do it more than that, in fact probably just once monthly if you wanted a regular schedule.
Check with the salespeople in your local health food store, they can easily steer you towards good products for your effort.
Dr. Daniel Pompa reveals the true meaning of detoxification. Detox occurs at the cellular level. True Detox at the cellular level involves the acceleration of GSH production. When toxins are removed inflammation decreases, hormones balance, health restores, weight is lost and lives are restored.

I’m going to start it in a few days and I just want ot know is there anything that can help me from not feeling so sick while im on it ? I understand about the bowel movements but I heard that sometimes its makes you feel really sick.
The reactions that you are experiencing is a normal sign of detoxification. I am not aware of any way to reduce the symptoms. The severity of the reactions usually depends on the sensitivity of your system. You should try to stay hydrated though. The usual recommendation for water intake is at least half of your body weight in ounces. The toxin being released is actually causing you to be sick, not the product that you might be taking. I would also consider making sure that the water you are ingestion are free of any toxins. The water that I use is filtered thru a Wellness Water Carafe. I hope this helps you. I want to wish you good luck in your cleansing your body of toxins.
